I took my husband and 13 year old twins to see Hadrian’s Wall. Thank goodness we booked a guide – without her we would have missed so much. We found Anna Gray who brought it all to life.
My son, who allegedly hates history and was not at all looking forward to the trip, absolutely loved it and now wants to go on an archaeological dig! My daughter, who is studying classical civilisations and so came with a fair amount of knowledge already, found it hugely interesting and helpful for her studies.
Anna was fun (we laughed a lot!) and informal, with tons of historical facts at her fingertips about the wall and the area and Roman Britain in general. Critically, she knew how much information to give and when to stop, so we remained fascinated rather than switching off.
The Vindolanda Museum is a must, but Anna put together a tailored tour with lots of other highlights too. We spent a whole day with her, starting near Carlisle and heading east, finishing with Vindolanda, where we chatted with the archaeologists about what they’d found that day.
