Special Interest Guided Tours

In Cumbria and the Lake District, there are so many themes that could be enjoyed.  I’ve picked out four of my favourites here, but other special interest tours could cover themes such as historic houses and gardens, William Wordsworth, landscape interpretation, maritime and industrial heritage, guided wildlife tours and many other possibilities.

For specialist guided tours around the enigmatic Solway Coast (west of Carlisle), I can recommend Fiona Stoddart who will uncover the hidden secrets of the Solway on a guided minibus tour.  www.solwayconnections.co.uk

If you are interested in a particular theme or type of guided tour, please get in touch so we can discuss your requirements in more detail.

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall stands as testimony to one of the Roman world’s greatest emperors.  Its many forts, milecastles, turrets and temples reveal much about the ancient world of the Romans nearly 2000 years ago.  Add in Mithraic Temples, Arthurian legends, tales of Border Reivers and the astounding finds from Vindolanda and you have enough to occupy up to three days of touring along the Wall.  There’s so much to see along the Wall that every guided tour is personalised to suit each client’s specific interests and needs, so please get in touch to see how you can get the most out of your visit.

‘Thank you for a wonderful day and for giving so much of yourself and your knowledge to us.  We loved being with you.’

Sacred Landscapes

A guided tour around the enigmatic stone circles and megalithic monuments of the Eden Valley to understand how they relate to the landscape.  We visit Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle, wonder at the mysteries of Mayburgh Henge, discover remnants of an impressive ‘avenue’ of standing stones, and explore the gaunt ruins of Shap Abbey.

‘Anna struck just the right balance between enthusiasm and a deep knowledge of the sacred landscapes that we visited. She tailored the tour to meet my specific requirements yet also included monuments and sights that I didn’t even know existed, let alone thought to ask about’

Romans and Reivers

A special tour delving into the historical turmoil of the borderlands.  In AD 122, a 73-mile-long wall was begun to control access in and out of the Roman Empire.  Hadrian’s Wall (as it became known) was to mark a boundary between the Roman perception of ‘civilised’ Britannia and the barbarian north.  We explore the significance of the Wall and contrast it with the culture of endemic lawlessness practised by the infamous Border Reivers over 250 years from the 14th century.  This full-day guided tour will take you to sites associated with the Romans and the Border Reivers including Carlisle, Arthuret Church, Netherby Hall, Bewcastle, Banks Turret and Birdoswald Roman Fort.

‘We had a wonderful experience – exactly what we had hoped for!’

A Tale of Beatrix Potter

The inspiration for many of Beatrix’s much-loved children’s books was drawn from Cumbria.  On this full day guided tour, we follow in her footsteps, visiting sites that played a key part in the story of her life and understand how she came to be one of the most generous benefactors of the Lake District. This tour can be undertaken by car or electric bicycle.

‘Words cannot express our thanks and appreciation for a truly wonderful and informative day with you in Cumbria.’
